The 5 types of kitchens

Today I as designing kitchen layouts and realized realized that most kitchen designs fall into these 5 essential categories:

  1. Linear

  2. Parallel

  3. Galley

  4. L-Shaped

  5. U-shaped

A common variation of these designs includes adding a kitchen island. Of course, they vary in size too!

In a linear kitchen all the cabinets are along a single wall

1. A linear kitchen has a single bank of cabinets along one wall.

2. This parallel kitchen layout has a bank of cabinets along a wall and a parallel peninsula.



A galley kitchen has banks of counters along two parallel walls

An L-shaped kitchen has two banks of cabinets that meet at corner.


U-Shaped Kitchen

A U-shaped kitchen is similar to a galley kitchen but has cabinetry on three sides.
